A compress is a medical method of local treatment, in which a multilayer bandage soaked in a drug or liquid is applied to a certain area of the body. It is used to reduce pain, swelling, inflammation, resorption of infiltrates or improve blood circulation in tissues. Compresses come in different types – warm, cold, alcohol, oil or dry, and the choice depends on the purpose of treatment.

A warm compress is usually used to relax muscles, reduce spasms, and improve local blood flow. Cold – for acute injuries, bruises or inflammation to reduce pain and swelling. Alcohol compresses (often semi-alcoholic) are used for otitis media, tonsillitis, for a warming effect. The bandage consists of three layers: inner (gauze or bandage dipped in medicine), insulating (parchment, polyethylene) and insulating (cotton wool, scarf) to keep the temperature.

Compresses are a simple and affordable treatment, but they should be used with caution. The wrong temperature or substance can cause burns, irritation or increased inflammation. Before using the compress, it is advisable to consult a doctor, especially if we are talking about children, allergy sufferers or people with chronic skin diseases.
