Sedatives are a class of medications that are designed to reduce anxiety, tension, and restlessness, as well as to improve sleep. These remedies have a calming effect on the central nervous system, helping patients cope with emotional and psychological states related to stress and anxiety.

Sedatives can have different mechanisms of action, including enhancing the action of neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which plays a role in regulating neuronal activity. They can be prescribed by a doctor to treat a wide range of conditions, including anxiety disorders, insomnia, panic attacks, and depression.
