Varicose veins are a chronic disease in which there is impaired blood circulation and thickening of the veins, most often of the lower extremities. The process is characterized by deterioration of the venous valves and stagnation of blood in the veins, which leads to their dilation and deformation. Risk factors include heredity, prolonged standing on your feet, obesity, pregnancy, and several other conditions.
Clinical manifestations of varicose veins may include nodular, dilated veins visible under the skin, swelling, heaviness and pain in the legs, itching, and skin discoloration in the area of the affected veins. In more severe cases, trophic ulcers may develop. Ultrasound examination of the veins (Doppler sonography) and other methods are used for diagnosis. Treatment may include wearing compression garments, pharmacotherapy, sclerotherapy, or surgery. It is also important to follow a work and rest regimen, engage in physical activity and control body weight.
