Arrhythmia is a disturbance in the normal heart rhythm (too frequent, too infrequent, or irregular heartbeats). It may be asymptomatic or accompanied by sensations of irregularity, palpitations, weakness, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
The causes of arrhythmia are varied and include heart disease, electrolyte imbalances, the effects of medications and stimulants, hormonal changes, stress, and other factors. Management depends on the type of arrhythmia and the clinical situation; medical evaluation is required for symptoms, fainting, or chest pain.
