β-pinene is a monoterpene, a natural compound found in the essential oils of many plants, especially conifers and spicy herbs. It has a woody, spicy, slightly resinous aroma and is often used in the production of aromatic compositions, cosmetics and household chemicals.
Pharmacologically, β-pinene exhibits antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. It is also being studied as a compound with potential for use in the therapy of respiratory and inflammatory diseases and as a natural repellent.
