The chitinous covering is an outer protective layer formed from chitin, which is characteristic of arthropods, in particular insects and crustaceans. It performs the functions of mechanical protection and maintaining body shape.

In cosmetology and medicine, chitin and its derivatives are used as biocompatible materials for skin regeneration and the creation of protective coatings.
