“Magnesium sulfate” is a traditional medicine for use
according to indications confirmed by long-term use.

Application method

Magnesium sulfate should be prescribed internally (at night or on an empty stomach for 30
minutes before meals) once a day: adults – 10-30 g in ½ glass of water,
for children aged 12 and over – 10 g in ½ glass of water, for children aged 6-12
years prescribe from 5 to 10 g (that is, from half to the entire volume
solution prepared at the rate of 10 g per ½ glass of water). At
chronic constipation to use in enemas: contents of 1 bag (10 g)
dissolve in 500 ml of water and use in the prescribed amount

Pharmacological properties.
Pharmacodynamics.
Internal use causes a laxative effect. The drug also has a choleretic effect
and diuretic action.
Pharmacokinetics.
The laxative effect is caused by a change in osmotic pressure, a delay in the absorption of water from
intestines, liquefaction and increase in the volume of intestinal contents, irritation
enteroreceptors, which facilitates the act of defecation.
Clinical characteristics.

Contraindication.
Increased individual sensitivity, acute inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract

Special security measures.
The drug is not recommended to be used systematically.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions.
Reduces the effect of oral anticoagulants, cardiac glycosides, phenothiazines. Lowers
absorption of ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines, weakens the effect of streptomycin and tobramycin.
Pharmaceutically incompatible (a precipitate is formed) with calcium preparations, ethanol (in high
concentrations), carbonates, phosphates of alkali metals, salts of arsenic acid, barium,
strontium, clindamycin phosphate, hydrocortisone sodium succinate, polymyxin sulfate,
procaine hydrochloride, salicylates and tartrates.

As a laxative, magnesium sulfate should be prescribed internally (at night or on an empty stomach for 30
minutes before meals) once a day: adults – 10-30 g in ½ glass of water, children aged 12 and over
– 10 g in ½ glass of water, children aged 6-12 years should be prescribed from 5 to 10 g (i.e. from
half to the entire volume of the solution prepared at the rate of 10 g per ½ glass of water).
For chronic constipation, use in enemas: dissolve the contents of 1 bag (10 g) in 500 ml of water
and use in the amount prescribed by the doctor.
In case of poisoning with soluble barium salts, adults should be prescribed 20-25 g of powder internally,
dissolved in 200 ml of water.
Children.
It is used for children aged 6 years and older only as prescribed by a doctor.
Overdose.
In case of overdose, diarrhea and vomiting may occur.
Treatment: intravenous administration of a solution of calcium chloride or calcium gluconate –
5-10 ml of 10% solution, carry out oxygen therapy, inhalation of carbogen, artificial respiration,
peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis. The therapy is symptomatic.
Adverse reactions.
Termination of pregnancy, exacerbation of inflammatory processes in the gastrointestinal tract,
nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions. In case of long-term use, a violation of the water-
salt metabolism, impaired nutrition of the body, atony of the large intestine.
