Mucolytic effect is the ability of the substance to liquefy sputum (mucus) in the respiratory tract, reducing its viscosity and facilitating expulsion from the bronchi during coughing. This effect is especially important in diseases of the respiratory system, accompanied by difficult mucus discharge – bronchitis, tracheitis, pneumonia.
Mucolytics work in different ways: they break the bonds in the structure of mucus, stimulate the production of less viscous secretion or activate the cilia of the mucous epithelium. As a result, airway clearance improves and breathing becomes easier.
