Novocaine is a local anesthetic belonging to the group of esters of para-aminobenzoic acid. Its active substance is procaine, which blocks the conduction of nerve impulses, temporarily reducing sensitivity at the injection site. Due to this, novocaine is widely used for pain relief in dentistry, surgery, gynecology, urology and other medical procedures.
A feature of novocaine is its mild action, low toxicity and the ability to be quickly excreted from the body. It is often used not only as an analgesic, but also to reduce tissue sensitivity during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (for example, novocaine blockade for neuralgia or spasms). In addition, novocaine can have mild vasodilator, anti-inflammatory and antiarrhythmic effects.
Despite its relative safety, novocaine can cause allergic reactions, low blood pressure, or heart rhythm disturbances in case of overdose or hypersensitivity to the drug. Therefore, its use should take place only under the supervision of a medical specialist, taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient.
