A wound is damage to the skin, mucous membrane, or deeper tissues with a violation of their integrity. It can occur as a result of a cut, puncture, bite, mechanical trauma, surgery, or other factors.
Wound healing goes through several interrelated phases: stopping bleeding, inflammation, formation of new tissue, and its subsequent restructuring. For normal healing, cleaning and proper wound care, protection from contamination, and monitoring for possible signs of infection are important.
