The main function of bile is to assimilate and digest fats, especially after eating a meal rich in fats. In addition to the function of digestion, bile also plays a role in the elimination of waste and toxins from the body. The bilirubin contained in bile is a product of the breakdown of red blood cells, and its removal through bile helps cleanse the body of old and damaged cells.
Impaired production or outflow of bile can lead to various diseases such as gallstone disease, jaundice or cholecystitis. These conditions require medical intervention and treatment to restore normal gallbladder and biliary tract function.
