Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. There are two main types: type 1 (insulin-dependent), when the pancreas does not produce insulin, and type 2 (insulin-independent), in which there is an impaired perception of insulin by the tissues.

The main symptoms are: increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, weight loss (in type 1). Treatment includes glucose control, diet, exercise, and sometimes medication or insulin. Regular blood sugar checks are important.
