The gums are the soft tissues that surround the necks of the teeth and cover the alveolar processes of the jaws. They are part of the periodontium, protect deeper tissues and form a dense barrier around the teeth.
Healthy gums usually fit snugly against the teeth, do not have swelling, and do not bleed. Their color can vary from pink to darker depending on their natural pigmentation. Redness, swelling, and bleeding can be signs of gingivitis or other periodontal conditions.
