PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is a medical condition that some women exhibit with physical and emotional symptoms before menstruation begins. These symptoms may include irritability, fatigue, sadness, swelling of the breasts, headaches, abdominal pain, and others. PMS often starts a week or two before menstruation and can greatly affect a woman’s quality of life.

The causes of PMS are not fully understood, but it is assumed that changes in hormone levels in the body, such as estrogen and progesterone, play a role in its development. The diagnosis of PMS is established on the basis of symptoms and their time of appearance in the cycle.

Treatment for PMS may include lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, physical activity, and stress management, as well as medications such as antidepressants, pain medications, and contraceptives. For many women with PMS, symptoms can be alleviated or controlled, allowing them to experience the premenstrual period more comfortably.
