Prebiotics are dietary substances (usually of plant origin) that are not digested in the gastrointestinal tract but serve as a nutrient medium for beneficial intestinal bacteria.

The most common prebiotics are inulin, fructooligosaccharides, and pectin. They promote the growth of probiotic flora and improve digestion.
