Bedsores are local lesions of the skin and underlying tissues that occur as a result of prolonged or intense pressure, or a combination of pressure and tissue displacement. Most often, they form in sedentary people over bony prominences, for example, in the area of the sacrum, heels, elbows, or hip joints.
Prevention of bedsores involves regular changes in body position, taking into account the person’s condition, the use of pressure redistribution devices, skin care, and control of humidity and nutrition. Already formed pressure ulcers require reducing pressure on the affected area, assessing the depth of damage, proper wound care, and monitoring for possible signs of infection.
