The drug is designed specifically to combat excessive sweating – it is used for hyperhidrosis of the feet, palms and armpits, as well as for the treatment of shoes when it is necessary to get rid of a persistent odor or reduce the risk of fungal infection. The drug is available in bottles of 50 and 100 ml; In the pharmacy chain, a convenient spray format is increasingly common, although the official dosage form remains a “solution for external use”.
What is Formidron?
Physically, Formidron is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic cologne-alcohol aroma. It spreads easily over the skin, evaporates quickly and leaves behind a dry surface and a cool feeling. The main therapeutic task of the solution is to “turn off” sweating in the problem area for a long time and at the same time neutralize the bacteria that decompose sweat and turn it into a source of unpleasant odor. An additional bonus is the ability of formaldehyde to inhibit the growth of dermatophytes, so the drug is often prescribed as a component of a comprehensive regimen for chronic fungus of the feet and nails.
Although Formidron is sold over-the-counter and is inexpensive, it should be treated as a serious drug. Its active ingredients can cause skin irritation if handled carelessly, so the manufacturer strictly limits the age (from 14 years) and insists on compliance with the dosage and frequency of application.

Thanks to this composition, Formidron works in three stages. First, the alcohol evaporates quickly, dehydrating the surface of the epidermis and temporarily narrowing the pores. Then formaldehyde reacts with proteins and fixes in the surface layers of the skin, forming a kind of “plug” through which it is difficult for sweat to come out. And, finally, the residual molecules continue antiseptic “protection”, preventing bacteria and fungi from restoring the previous colony. It is the combination of drying, blocking the glands and sterilizing the microflora that explains the fact that after one or two procedures, dryness can last a week or longer.
How to use Formidron?
Correct application is half the battle. The skin is always washed with soap and dried thoroughly: moisture reduces the effectiveness of the drug and increases the risk of irritation.
For the legs
After an evening shower or bath, the feet are left in the air for 10-15 minutes, then the cotton pad is abundantly moistened with the solution and the entire sole is evenly wiped, especially between the toes and around the nail folds. A slight tingling sensation and the smell of alcohol are felt – this is normal. After five minutes, when the surface becomes dry, clean cotton socks are put on. Usually, it is enough to treat the feet once a day for three days; Then take a week’s break and assess the effect. If the skin is sensitive, it is allowed to wash off the remnants of the drug after 10-15 minutes and apply a moisturizer.
For armpits
This zone is thinner and the capillary network is closer, so the solution is applied with a cotton swab or spray in a minimum amount. It is better to shorten the hair, but do not shave immediately before the procedure. After a quarter of an hour, the armpits are rinsed with cool water, patted with a towel and, if necessary, a mild fragrance-free cream is used. It is not recommended to repeat the treatment more than twice a week.
For hands
The scheme is similar to foot care, but the exposure is reduced to 5-7 minutes and must end with washing with warm water and mild soap. After drying, it is useful to apply a light cream or gel with panthenol, since the skin of the palms loses moisture faster.
For shoes
Deep disinfection from the inside helps to get rid of the smell. At night, a cotton swab abundantly moistened with the solution is placed inside the boot, or Formidron is sprayed several times directly on the insole and interior trim. Formaldehyde vapors destroy microflora, and in the morning it is enough to ventilate shoes on the balcony. The procedure is repeated every two weeks or more often if the shoes are worn daily.
The use of Formidron for fungus
Formidron itself does not replace systemic antifungal agents, but it can significantly reduce the concentration of spores and enhance the effect of ointments, creams or varnish forms. The classic tactic looks like this: first, the feet or nails affected by the fungus are treated with a solution, wait for complete drying, and then apply an antifungal drug recommended by a dermatologist. Thus, the keratolyzing and antiseptic effect of formaldehyde helps the active substance to penetrate deeper, and fungal colonies are removed from shoes at the same time, which reduces the risk of reinfection.
Precautions
Formidron is allowed only from the age of 14; For younger children, the drug is too aggressive. Pregnant women and the elderly are prescribed it with an eye to the condition of the skin and only if the expected benefit outweighs the possible risk. It is strictly forbidden to apply the solution to the face, mucous membranes, fresh wounds, as well as to areas with dermatitis or eczema.
The procedure is carried out in a well-ventilated room, avoiding inhalation of vapors. If during or after application there is a sharp hyperemia, itching, burning, this is a sign of individual intolerance – the drug is washed off with cool water and no longer used. Overdose with too frequent use leads to dryness, peeling and microcracks, so the intervals in the course should be strictly adhered to.
