This information sheet provides a summary of the scientific literature and does not address any specific health benefits of dietary supplements. The information provided does not constitute medical advice and is not a substitute for professional health advice. The following information is based on scientific literature* and is provided for informational purposes only.
Icelandic moss (Cetraria islandica) is not a moss, but a lichen that grows in the harsh conditions of Northern Europe and has traditionally been used as a nutritious and soothing plant raw material. Its special value is determined by large polysaccharides, such as lichenin and isolichenin, which form a protective mucous layer on the respiratory and gastrointestinal mucosa, helping soothe irritation and maintain a natural feeling of comfort. In addition, lichen acids, in particular fumarprotocetraric, protocetraric, cetraric, and usnic acids, exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic properties, which contributes to maintaining natural immunity and balance on the mucous membranes.
Due to its high mucus content, up to approximately 70%, and astringent components, Icelandic moss is traditionally used as a natural thickener in syrups, lozenges, or teas that form a soothing film, especially in case of dry cough or an irritated throat.
Finally, these plant characteristics support not only respiratory but also digestive functions by soothing the stomach, promoting appetite, and providing easily digestible energy support.
