Phytoncides are volatile organic compounds produced by plants to protect against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms. These substances have antimicrobial, antibacterial and fungicidal properties, due to which they contribute to the destruction or suppression of pathogenic flora in the environment. Phytoncides are found in plants such as garlic, onions, conifers, eucalyptus, and many herbs and spices.
The presence of phytoncides in the forest coniferous air contributes to human health, improves the functioning of the respiratory system, increases immunity and has an overall healing effect. In traditional and folk medicine, plant extracts rich in phytoncides are used for the treatment and prevention of various diseases, as well as for disinfection of indoor air.
