Zinc is a trace element necessary for the normal functioning of the immune system, tissue healing, protein synthesis, and cell division. It is also involved in maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails.

Zinc deficiency can lead to decreased immune defense, impaired taste and smell, slow wound healing, and increased susceptibility to infections. The body gets zinc mainly from meat, seafood, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
