Glutathione peroxidase

03.06.2025 | Natalia Kandybey

Glutathione peroxidase is an enzyme from the antioxidant class that protects the body’s cells from oxidative damage. It catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic peroxides to non-toxic compounds involving reduced glutathione.

This enzyme plays a key role in maintaining cellular balance and preventing the destruction of membranes, proteins, and DNA by free radicals. Glutathione peroxidase requires the trace element selenium for normal functioning, so its activity is closely related to the level of selenium in the body.
