Fermentation is a biochemical process in which organic substances are broken down under the action of enzymes or microorganisms. In the intestines, fermentation is a natural part of digestion and helps process dietary fiber.

During fermentation, beneficial compounds are formed, including short-chain fatty acids that support gut health. At the same time, excessive fermentation can cause bloating, gas, and discomfort.
